How to Prepare for a Photoshoot

Getting ready to have pictures taken soon? I did a photoshoot recently so I have a few tips to share! First we need to know what kind of shoot you are preparing for. Is it an editorial shoot? Engagement shoot? Themed shoot? There are lots of styling elements that go into specialized photography sessions but for our purposes today I'll talk about general portrait sessions. Once you've booked a session and you've laid down the cash the last thing you want to do is end up with bad pictures because something has gone awry with either your clothes, hair, makeup or the set. Here are a few helpful tips that will get you ready for an amazing shoot.

  • Avoid any treatments or haircuts in the days leading up to your photos. Even if you've gone to the same place for years, don't go the night before. Trust me, I have been getting my eyebrows waxed for years but one time I ended up with a massive breakout of hives perfectly surrounding my brows. You don't want that captured on picture day.

  • Bring water and snacks because you don't want to be a hangry (that's hungry + angry) subject. It will show in your photos, so unless you are going for that look stay hydrated and satisfied.

  • The other side of this is that you don't want to overeat right before either. Bloated and sluggish is also not a good look for photos.

  • Put on a bit more makeup than you normally would, even if you are going for a natural look. The camera washes you out and flattens your features so you want to bring back the color and definition to your face. I recommend having your makeup professionally done, it makes a huge difference. You can get it done for free at any makeup counter, you just have to purchase an item which I'm sure you'll want to afterwards :)

  • Make sure your nails are manicured and fresh!

  • Clothes: You want to pick something flattering and add a pop of color. Jewel tones are quite flattering on most people as well as a V neckline. Add layers and accessories appropriately in order to add dimension and interest to your photos.

  • Undergarments: Be sure to wear undergarments that work well with your clothes and are invisible. ie no lacey bras under tops that will show the texture or underwear that give visible panty lines.

  • Glasses: I would take off the glasses for the photos unless that is the specific look you want, which is awesome too. In that case try popping the lenses out to avoid the glare and showcase your eyes.

  • Hair: I recommend washing your hair the day before so that you can style your second day hair for the photoshoot. Second day hair will hold the style much better.

Most important tip is to just be yourself and have fun. I know it can be an awkward situation if you don't like being in front of the camera but try to relax and not take yourself too seriously.

Let me know in the comments how you are preparing for your pictures and I'd also love to hear how they went!
